EdD Candidate Kathleen Mackenzie Awarded Dean’s Medal for Doctoral Thesis on Teaching Hispanic English Language Learners in the General Education Classroom
Northeastern University College of Professional Studies recognized 40 doctoral candidates at the College’s second doctoral hooding ceremony, symbolically welcoming them into the ranks of scholar-practitioners with the donning of their long-awaited doctoral hoods.
At the event, 15 doctoral candidates in the Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy and 25 doctoral candidates in the Doctor of Education (EdD) program were recognized by the academic leadership of the college, the faculty and their doctoral thesis advisors, with family, friends and colleagues in attendance.
The doctoral hooding ceremony is the first phase of the celebration of the completion of doctoral studies. The celebration culminates at the College of Professional Studies graduation in Matthews Arena on the Northeastern University campus amongst more than 900 fellow graduates. The College of Professional Studies has achieved international recognition as a leader in educating working professionals.

advisors, described doctoral studies as “a process that brought to life new scholarship, fresh ideas and insights that contribute to your field of study.” And, he noted the success of the doctoral candidates in completing their studies while balancing work and family responsibilities.
Kathleen Mackenzie, a candidate for the Doctor of Education degree, earned the Dean’s Medal for Outstanding Doctoral Work for her thesis entitled, “Teaching Hispanic English Language Learners in the General Education Classroom: A Phenomenological Study”. The Dean’s Medal is the highest academic honor for doctoral studies.
In awarding the medal, Dean LaBrie said, “Dr. MacKenzie produced an extraordinary doctoral thesis that reflects her interest in social justice and her passion for knowledge and education.”
Thesis advisor, Jane Lohmann, a faculty member in the Doctor of Education program noted, “Kathleen is an exceptional thinker, student and researcher who carefully designed and executed a Phenomenological project for her doctoral research. Phenomenology is a complex qualitative approach, and Kathleen took it upon herself to delve into its philosophical roots and application to research.”
Dr. MacKenzie brings 22 years of experience working as a clinical social worker and now a doctorate of education to her work as a bilingual school adjustment counselor in a primary and secondary school setting.
