Nadia Shulamite Burani
MS Regulatory Affairs ’25
Co-op: Lab Safety Operations Co-op at Northeastern University’s Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS)
What challenge did you tackle during your co-op?
The Methylene Chloride Compliance Initiative – I tackled a major regulatory compliance challenge when the EPA updated regulations regarding restricted chemicals. This required campus-wide coordination to ensure Northeastern University remained compliant with new federal safety standards while maintaining active research operations across 200+ labs.
How did you approach solving this complex organizational challenge?
I led communication efforts to inform over 100 Principal Investigators about the updated EPA regulations and worked directly with 200+ lab personnel to schedule mandatory lab visits and conduct compliance sampling. I leveraged the SciShield database system to track compliance status and ensure accurate data management, while collaborating with fellow co-op Aidan to implement safety measures, including restocking 35 spill response kits across campus.
What skills did you develop and apply during this experience?
- Stakeholder communication and coordination
 - Cross-functional collaboration with diverse teams
 - Project management across multiple departments
 - Python programming for data visualization and incident tracking
