Overview

Designed to meet current needs within the Global Network of Experiential Learning Educators (NExT), Northeastern’s Graduate Certificate in Experiential Teaching and Learning provides K-12 experiential educators with the knowledge and skills needed to design, facilitate, and lead engaging and meaningful learning experiences.

The coursework in this graduate certificate program explores the theoretical foundations, approaches, and strategies for learning through experience and how to apply these competencies with a commitment toward fostering educational equity through reflection, analysis, and action.

Experiential learning has been proven to be a highly effective pedagogy for multiple reasons:

  • promotes a learner-centric teaching environment
  • leads to increased student engagement and learning outcomes
  • has been shown to increase equity and close the achievement gap
  • promotes social emotional growth, student agency and self-authorship

Educators who are interested in seeking out leadership roles within schools will also benefit from earning this certificate as it covers content and skills needed for leading both student and adult experiential learning.

Program objectives

  • Develop skills needed to lead both student and adult experiential learning
  • Provides educators the ability to design, measure, and evaluate practices that lead to changes in student engagement and outcomes
  • Apply these competencies toward fostering educational equity through reflection, analysis, and action.

Unique features

  • Delivered in an online, experiential format, and is comprised of four, 4-credit courses
