About the Center
The Center for the Future of Higher Education and Work (CHEW) is a strategic innovation hub within Northeastern University that advances applied research, systems design, and cross-sector collaboration to build the future of dynamic, adaptive lifelong learning pathways.
Making Universities Work
CHEW Faculty Fellows Jessica Liebowitz and Ron Liebowitz lead a research program on data science/AI applications in higher education, motivated by the severe crisis in public confidence facing universities today.
OUR MISSION
“Universities face a crisis of confidence — not because people doubt higher education’s mission, but because they doubt universities can deliver on it.
What has been consistently overlooked in decades of higher ed reform discussions is the foundational layer: the governance structures and operational details underlying the entire educational enterprise.
Operational and governance dysfunction undermines educational excellence. The question is how to identify dysfunction in a productive way, and what to do about it. Our work deploys data science/AI to dig into governance and operations, understand challenges, and implement practical solutions—while training the next generation of higher ed leaders.
Our work includes two initiatives: Student-Administrator Partnerships and Mapping Higher Ed Decision-Making. Both projects rely on partnerships with outstanding data science/AI students.”
