Three Words to Describe Northeastern:

Global | Innovative | Collaborative

Liang Chen Northeastern University College of Professional Studies

Getting a degree while life is happening isn’t always easy. How have you faced and overcome some of these challenges?

Before coming to Northeastern, my biggest challenge was not knowing how to adapt to life in America. I was scared by the different cultures and the unknown. Once I arrived, I learned that facing problems and challenges is important. I took small steps by learning how to buy groceries, rent a house, and open a bank account on my own. Doing these things helped me feel more independent and truly experience freedom.

I faced many challenges when I returned to school after working for many years. Academics and everyday life were very different from what I was used to. My professors and advisors helped me learn new study methods, and my classmates and community gave me much support and confidence. With their help, I slowly learned to adapt and overcome these challenges.

What inspired you to join the Northeastern community?

I chose Northeastern because it is an inclusive community that gives everyone a chance to shine. I have work experience and skills in public speaking and making presentations, so I organized many events like visiting autistic students and joining marathons. As an international student, I face challenges with English, but the supportive community at Northeastern has helped me a lot.

What has your journey at Northeastern revealed to you about yourself?

My journey at Northeastern has shown me that I have a lot of untapped potential. I’ve learned new languages and coding skills—things I never thought possible. I’m grateful to be here because it has taught me that no matter your age, you always have the chance to start fresh. The most valuable skill I’ve learned along the way is to keep learning and always be ready to start over. My experience here taught me how to present myself, communicate with others, and quickly learn new things. These skills are essential in my current work and will continue to help me in my future academic and career pursuits.

What advice would you give to others considering higher education?

I advise everyone to stay open, inclusive, and honest with themselves. In the Northeastern community, it’s important to help others with unconditional love without expecting anything in return. This way, we share our values and build a supportive environment for everyone.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I see myself continuing to work in education and the field of economics, while always learning new things. I might pursue a PhD in economics or even start my own business. I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I’m excited about it and confident that things will keep getting better.

What are some of your hobbies and passions?

I enjoy traveling—I have visited 15 countries and love learning about different cultures and meeting new people. I also find great joy in helping others. For the past 10 years, I have volunteered with autistic children. Communicating with them makes me feel valuable and happy. Whether in my studies or everyday life, knowing that I can bring happiness to others is one of my greatest passions.
