Haedy Liu


Biography

Dr. Liu brings over 20 years of teaching and management experience to the classroom. Growing up bilingual in Spanish and English as well as learning Mandarin Chinese as an adult, she has tremendous personal appreciation for the interaction of language, culture, and learning. She also has extensive cross-cultural professional experience as she worked in China for 15 years in a variety of educational contexts. Dr. Liu taught high school biology at an international school and medical English at the provincial medical university in Yunnan, China. As a non-profit program manager of an HIV/AIDS prevention program, she also led a multi-national team that developed bilingual HIV/AIDS training materials for university students. Dr. Liu has given professional presentations both in the U.S. and China and continues to enjoy teaching international students and collaborating with colleagues throughout the world. She holds a master’s in TESOL and earned her Ph.D. in intercultural education. Since moving back to the U.S. in 2010, Dr. Liu has held positions of leadership as a department chair of an ESOL program at a community college and the director of ESOL at a four-year private university in central Texas.

Professional Activities

Dr. Liu has presented on topics such as academic integrity, diversity circles, and writing support for multilingual writers at a variety of professional conferences such as TESOL International Convention, NAFSA, TexTESOL, and the Center for Effectiveness in Learning and Teaching at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. She has been an invited speaker to China on the internationalization of higher education and served as a proposal reviewer for the 2020 TESOL International Convention & Language Expo.
