Why the News Feels Overwhelming—And How to Cope

Kristen Lee, a professor in the College of Professional Studies, and leader healthcare and biotech behavioral science, was recently cited in Scientific American on the impacts of our news consumption on our health. Noting that consuming too much distressing news can negatively impact mental health, Lee, along with others, offer several strategies to help people stay engaged with current events without compromising their mental health. Some examples include:

  1. Limit Exposure: Avoid excessive news consumption, especially if it causes stress or anxiety.
  2. Be Selective: Choose reliable news sources and avoid sensationalist media.
  3. Take Breaks: Step away from news and social media to give your mind a rest.
  4. Stay Informed, Not Overwhelmed: Balance staying informed with maintaining mental health.
  5. Seek Support: Talk to friends, family, or mental health professionals if needed.
