What research challenge did your dissertation address?

Abuhasan’s dissertation examined the equal representation of English Learner (EL) students in honors mathematics classes, focusing on the achievement gap between EL students and their mainstream peers in these advanced courses.

What inspired you to pursue this research?

Abuhasan was motivated by the persistent achievement gap she observed between EL students and mainstream students in honors mathematics classes, and by a desire to better understand — and help close — the gap in EL students’ access to and success in advanced math.

What was the impact and outcome of your research?

The study led to a professional development program that helped math and EL teachers across her district better understand EL students’ abilities and adopt strategies to support them. The work also strengthened teachers’ self-efficacy in working with EL students in advanced math settings.
