Dr. Elizabeth Zulick, Assistant Teaching Professor and Faculty Director for the Healthcare and Biotechnology domain, has been named as the new Director of the Lowell Institute School. Liz has worked collaboratively to build a path for Biotechnology undergraduate students to the PlusOne master’s in Biotechnology at Northeastern’s College of Science. Liz also serves as Special Assistant to the Dean for Research, Innovation, Discovery and Entrepreneurship.
The creation of the Biotechnology PlusOne provided the foundation for the successful grant application that Liz and colleagues made to the National Science Foundation for $4.4 million in funding for the innovative Associate’s to Master’s (A2M) program. In the A2M program, Pell-Eligible, full-time students begin their biotech studies at Middlesex Community College earning an associate’s degree, earn their bachelor’s degree at the College of Professional Studies, and then earn a master’s at the College of Science. Their tuition is covered for the AS and BS degree, and the majority of the MS degree, as are textbooks, laptops, transportation, tutoring, and more. This pathway helps provide the highly trained workforce that is essential to the biotechnology field in Massachusetts and beyond.
Liz’s goals for the Lowell Institute School include expanding relationships with community colleges to provide more opportunity to students, directing more scholarship aid to students, including continuing students, and attuning the school’s STEM programs to the needs of employers across New England.
Liz joined the College of Professional Studies in 2016. Previously, Liz was a post-doctoral fellow in the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Boston University and taught at Boston University’s Metropolitan College and College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the University of Massachusetts. She earned a PhD in Molecular Medicine and Master’s in Public Health, both from Boston University.
