Overview

If you're a striver, a searcher, a trailblazer, a budding entrepreneur, or just want to move up that company ladder, Interdisciplinary Studies may be the right fit. Our instructors and administrators are innovators with a passion for reimagining higher education. As industries reinvent the workforce in the Age of AI and reconsider how humanity fits into the big picture, our Interdisciplinary Studies program prepares you to become indispensable as an employee.

Interdisciplinary Studies Isn't for the Faint of Heart

The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies is aimed at students who are ready for a challenge. Yes, there are other paths to a Northeastern degree, but if you're willing to work hard in a rigorous, boundary-pushing program, Interdisciplinary Studies might be what you’re after. We are looking for intellectually curious self-starters who are not content with neat academic boundaries.

Why Interdisciplinary Studies?

Here in Interdisciplinary Studies, we don’t do siloed or one size-fits-all degrees-- that's so 20th Century. The heart of an Interdisciplinary education is a willingness to blend fields. That’s where the magic happens--where the connections are made.

The Interdisciplinary Studies curriculum lets you pick two or three focus areas and your advisor and program lead help you build your degree around them. Simply put, our curriculum provides a cohesive, personalized learning path that sparks creative thinking in the 21st Century workplace. Interdisciplinary Studies gives you the intellectual agility to pivot across multiple fields in your career and stay relevant as industries evolve. Moreover,  you can carve out niche roles in the workforce or pioneer new ones by blending skills from multiple areas.

The real world doesn't line up by individual academic departments. Why should your education? Whether your ambition is to stand out in a Fortune 500 company, launch your own startup, or reimagine public policy, our curriculum lets you reach for the sky.

How does the personalized curriculum work?

Working closely with your advisor and the program lead, you’ll develop expertise in areas that both inspire you and are sought by employers. For instance, employers value workers who can combine management with psychology to know what truly motivates customers. So why not blend management and psychology in your personalized curriculum? Employers also prize professionals who can merge digital communication and analytics to craft and deliver compelling keynote addresses at company conventions. So maybe your personalized curriculum will integrate digital communication and analytics. Meanwhile, top-tier hospitals have a pressing need for folks who can integrate healthcare administration, project management, finance, and accounting. So why not work with your advisor and program lead to merge these three areas into your personalized curriculum? The choice is yours, and the possibilities are endless.

What can I do with an Interdisciplinary Degree?

Interdisciplinary studies graduates stand out because they think big, connect the dots fast, and can communicate across disciplines. With their synapses snapping a little faster, they lead, teach, innovate, and invent, sometimes simultaneously. We encourage Interdisciplinary Studies students to dream big and become a:

Business Visionary. Launch startups with both technical competency and a keen insight into human nature.

Policy Influencer. Apply data driven insights to shape major policy decisions, locally, nationally and internationally.

Design Leader. Create avant-garde product lines that appeal to diverse audiences.

AI Research Director. Forge exciting new endeavors at the intersection of mind and machine.

Trailblazing Entrepreneur. Merge marketing fundamentals with project management skills and identify opportunities in industries that others don’t see.

Robots and algorithms can crunch data and automate tasks, but they still can’t think critically, empathize, or invent the next big idea. With an interdisciplinary studies degree, you’ll weave together insights from different fields and build a robot-proof skill set that combines adaptability, integrative thinking, and a human-centered approach that cultivates empathy, creativity, humility and integrity through a curriculum grounded in the liberal arts.
